Orofacial Pain Workshop

Orofacial Pain Workshop

Workshop Title: Beyond the Tooth: A Practical Masterclass in Orofacial Pain Diagnosis & Examination

Speaker: Dr Amanda Phoon

Date: 15 January 2027, 2-6pm

Venue: Academia, Seminar Room L1-S1

Format: 3 Hours Lecture + 1 Hour Live Clinical Demonstration

*Exclusive to Registered SIOHEC Delegates
This workshop is available only to participants with a valid SIOHEC Registration Ticket.

Description:

Orofacial pain can be one of the most challenging presentations in dental practice. When pain persists without obvious clinical or radiographic findings, clinicians are often faced with uncertainty around diagnosis, management, and referral pathways.

This practical pre-conference masterclass is designed to give clinicians a clear, structured approach to assessing patients with orofacial pain. Through lectures, clinical cases and live demonstration, participants will learn how to differentiate odontogenic from non-odontogenic pain, recognise common temporomandibular disorders, identify neuropathic pain presentations, and perform a focused examination of the patient with orofacial pain.

Topics include:

  • Understanding pain mechanisms relevant to clinical practice

  • Temporomandibular disorders: diagnosis and conservative management

  • Trigeminal neuropathy, neuralgia and neuropathic pain

  • Structured examination of the patient with orofacial pain

  • A simplified cranial nerve examination for the dental clinician

  • Clinical decision-making, red flags and referral pathways

The session will conclude with a live clinical demonstration of an orofacial pain examination, with practical techniques that participants can immediately apply in practice.

Ideal for: general dentists, specialists, oral health therapists, dental students and clinicians with an interest in pain diagnosis, temporomandibular disorders and complex dental pain presentations.

Description:

From Soft Tissue to Hard Tissue: Practical Laser Applications

Laser technologies have revolutionized modern dental practice by offering minimally invasive, precise, and patient-friendly treatment options for both hard and soft tissue procedures. This hands-on workshop is designed for dentists at the beginner or early-intermediate level who wish to gain a comprehensive overview of different laser types.

Participants will observe and perform key clinical procedures including caries removal, soft tissue surgery (such as frenectomy or gingivectomy), and bone cutting. The workshop will emphasize laser-tissue interaction, proper technique, safety protocols, and clinical indications. Attendees will have the opportunity to compare laser systems, understand their unique advantages, and learn how to integrate them effectively into daily practice. This session is ideal for clinicians considering the introduction of laser technology into their workflow and for those seeking to better understand the clinical value and versatility of various laser wavelengths.

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate laser-assisted techniques for caries removal, soft tissue procedures (e.g., frenectomy), and bone cutting using appropriate clinical parameters.

  • Recognize the indications and contraindications for laser use in different clinical scenarios.

  • Apply basic safety protocols for laser operation in a clinical environment.

  • Evaluate the benefits and limitations of integrating laser technologies into general dental practice
